Entry 4: Favorite Holiday

This Wednesday in the U.S. is Valentine's Day, a romantic holiday when people buy flowers or chocolates for their boyfriend or girlfriend or spouse. For this blog entry, please write about your favorite holiday in your home country. What do you do to celebrate this special day? Do you eat a certain kind of food? Who do you celebrate with? Do we celebrate this holiday in the U.S.?

Remember to make your entry at least 75 words long and post it by midnight February 18th. I look forward to reading about your favorite holiday!

In my country my favorite holiday is the mother's day.During this day all the mothers have to receive some gift on behalf of their husbands and children. In this special day the husband must cook some food for their wife.Last years in this opportunity i gave to my mother of the jewel gold and she was very happy; my father had cooked some "to" has sauce "gombo", it is a specialty of my country. This day we had eaten in family and we were very enjoyed.I will never forget this day...

That sounds like a really fun holiday! We have Mother's Day in the U.S., too - it is the second Sunday of May. But I don't think that the husband has to cook for the wife - usually he takes her out to eat at a nice restaurant.

"TABASKI" is an holiday that I really like. It's a moslem's holiday.First thing you do when you wake up is to clean your house because many people will come.At 9 o'clock we go to the prayer whish lasts about 30 minutes. After that everybody returns home. There, some cousins and friends come and help us to kill maybe 2 or 3 sheeps.Ambiance is nice and pleasant this time because everybody is happy. We joke in working.Meanwhile women cook some delicious dishes. We eat and after you leave the house and go anywhere.Maybe you can go in your aunts or friens's house.Night my friends and I go to dance in a club. There you can meet others friends and share the event. So "TABASKI"'s day is really nice and fun due to everybody's happiness.

Oumarou, Tabaski sounds like a very fun holiday! This reminds me of the Muslim holiday that was celebrated in the Ivory Coast when I visited there. At night, everyone was mingling in the streets and going to visit friends and relatives. In the U.S. there is not this kind of free-visiting time like there is in Burkina faso - you have to call someone and plan a time to visit, or else it is considered impolite.

Nadege, St. Sylvester's day also sounds very fun. We have New Years Eve here, but not all the family traditions that you describe. And usually we don't stay up until 6:00 am!

Jun, Thank you for sharing about your different holidays on the 14th of every month. I think this sounds like a neat idea! Of course if you don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend it might not be very fun :) But I do think it is important to set aside time to remember your loved ones, so this is a good reason for these holidays.

I deleted the extra posts this week! Some of you submitted your entry more than once.

In my country we are celebrating Ramadan eid. This eid takes three sequential days every year. These days we visit relatives such as grandfather and grandmother, uncle, aunt. This relatives generally make dessert we called baklava we usually don`t work these three days.In addition to this, children kiss parent`s hands and their parents give them money or candy. Also rich people help to poor people such as giving money or food and this is our religious holiday.American people don`t celebrate this holiday.

My favorite holiday is Eid. It is holiday for Muslim people. It is two time a year. The first Eid we have it after Ramadan. The second one is the first days in Hajj. In the Eid days the families get together. And the children get together. And sometimes our family take us to vacations..
